Making the step into private skating lessons is always a confusing one. There's a lot of points to consider. Don't make the decision in haste. Your private instructor will be a mentor and role model as well as a teacher. Pick someone that you and your child feels comfortable with and who is willing to listen to your goals.

If you are interested, private lessons and group classes can work hand in hand. Privates allow for individual instruction towards specific goals. Sometimes a skater needs the extra attention, especially as elements get harder. In addition, some aspects are very difficult in a group setting, such as choreographing a program for a competition.
On the other hand, groups are a wonderful tool for getting the opinions of multiple coaches especially when a skater is struggling with an element. Also, it allows the skater's to form strong friendships with the others that progress through the class levels with them.

Usually, the most common question is related to price. I break down the fees I charge on my Fees page. Coaches in Central ohio range from around $35-60/hour depending on experience and credentials.

To compare, if you're in group lessons, you're paying $110-125 for 8 weeks. That's $15.63/week for a skater in the Freestyle class. By comparison, at my lesson rate of $25 for a half hour lesson plus ice time of $6 for a half hour, you'd pay $31.00/week. So, it works out that private lessons start out at about double the price of group lessons.

I do recommend that skaters practice for at least one hour for every 30 minutes of lesson time, so that changes the price a bit, but at least that can be flexible according to your needs.
